Case Study O1 - Final Quiz - Answer (Question 7)

Is it unusual that a product such as IV RhIG (IgG anti-D) would cause apparent intravascular hemolysis (IVH)? Explain.

  1. yes
  2. no

a. Yes. Immune-mediated IVH is caused by antibodies that can bind complement to C9, such as anti-A and anti-B. Rh antibodies do not bind complement at all.
