Case Study A4 - Answer (Question 5)

Which non-serological laboratory test results may be helpful when investigating DHTR?

The main non-serological test result that provides evidence of EVH and is useful for investigating DHTR is hyperbilirubinemia.

Although more associated with the IVH of immediate hemolytic transfusion reactions, test results that are also seen in DHTR include

  • elevated lactate dehydrogenase
  • decreased haptoglobin

These tests must be medically evaluated in context with the patients overall clinical condition and history.
