About Daryl Gouthro

Daryl Gouthro, RT (CSMLS)

Daryl trained in medical laboratory technology at the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology in Halifax. He moved to Drumheller, Alberta working in a small general hospital. Two years later he took a position at St. Paul’s in the Blood Bank working permanent evenings for his first year in Vancouver and then took a position in the clinical chemistry department of Vancouver General Hospital for five years. He later worked in sales selling both blood bank reagents and infectious disease markers.

In 1990 he returned to St. Paul’s working in the hematology lab until he accepted a part time position back in the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory. Daryl also works on a casual basis for the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory at Children’s and Women’s in Vancouver, as well as the Provincial Blood Coordinating Office, a project-based office working on a variety of initiatives relating to transfusion medicine in British Columbia.

In 2000 Daryl accepted a temporary position as a Quality Systems Technologist at St. Paul’s, which later became a full time position. In this position he is responsible for working with the regulations of Health Canada, Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine, and the American Association of Blood Banks ensuring the transfusion medicine laboratory meets the required standards. In maintaining a transfusion service, compliance with regulatory agencies is mandatory.
